Picasso's Legacy: Inspiring Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Disrupt Art Again. | The Digital Book Squad.

Part I:

The dichotomy between innate talent and acquired skills or primary and secondary inspirations, has long been a focal point in the dynamic world of art. Traditionally, an artist's prowess is gauged by their ability to uniquely interpret ideas creatively through painstaking processes – using their gifted and charcoal stained hands, pencils, water colors or oil paints, different brush strokes and so on, to create a distinctive value for their work. However, the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) introduces a paradigm shift, offering smarter alternatives that can swiftly and adeptly interpret concepts. Critics see AI art as unoriginal or lazy art forgetting that crafting generative prompts indeed requires a unique skill set, akin to the talents of a traditional artist. It is simply a fascinating evolution where technology enhances and transforms the creative process.

The crux of the matter lies in the juxtaposition of traditional craftsmanship against the efficiency and precision of AI algorithms. The value proposition extends beyond personal preferences, delving into a nuanced debate on the evolving definition of artistic merit – issues surrounding originality, creativity, technical skills, emotional impact, cultural significance and more. Other related controversial topics include authorship, copyright issues, intellectual property rights and more.

For a specie that has been through various stages of evolution and industrial revolutions; the cave man era, writing with stones and scrolls, the pencil and paper era, coal, metallurgy, steam power, invention of cars, electricity & automation, gas, electronics, nuclear power, internet, renewable energy and more – one would have expected a more receptive and open-minded approach in discussing whether or not AI art is "real" art as this is a very complex topic. While there are legitimate concerns that need to be addressed, there is no one answer that will satisfy everyone, as the definition of art is subjective and can vary from person to person. Generally speaking, art works are meant to calm nerves, inspire us or adorn our environment. If a piece of art can evoke emotions and provoke thoughts in viewers, then such art work has achieved the purpose regardless of the mediums, processes or platforms used to make or interpret such. Art lovers or consumers will always have their preferences in these matters but more importantly are the moral or ethical values surrounding such art pieces.

Picasso Reborn

Pablo Picasso a towering figure in the art world was renowned for his versatility, boundless creativity and willingness to push artistic boundaries. To interpret some of his ideas, he used pencil, charcoal, ink, chalk, etc. In fact, in his Cubist drawing; Picasso used ‘found and unconventional’ items in his art - cardboard, wallpapers, and newspaper. This challenged conventional notions of art and sparked debates about the ethical implications of artistic appropriation. Picasso, the trailblazer of artistic innovation, could have stuck with conventional tools - perhaps a chisel and stone tablets just to keep things historically accurate. Why bother with materials like cardboard, wallpapers, or newspapers? I mean, was that even considered real art in his time? Just like the critics, one can almost hear him now, passionately explaining, "No, no, I can't possibly use this newspaper in my art. It's far too innovative and modern, my avant-garde reputation would suffer. Let's stick to ancient papyrus scrolls, shall we?" Who needs versatility when you can keep things comfortably obsolete?

Some of his innovative art works include 'Still Life with Violin & Newspaper (1912)', 'Guernica (1937)' – suffice to say that when Pablo unveiled these pieces, he probably became a threat to the artists of his era. He was called a fraud; that his newly unveiled cubist art pieces were ‘ugly’ and ‘nonsensical but the incorporation of newspapers into his art works reflected his awareness of current events and the impact of technology on society, while playing cards and wallpaper provided a sense of pattern and structure amidst the fragmentation of Cubism. Centuries down the line, humanity seems to be doing just fine – there seems to be enough room for different genres of art until the invention of AI.

Ethical Concerns in Picasso’s Era:

Picasso's use of newspaper prints raises questions about copyright infringement and the artist's right to transform preexisting material into a new work of art. While the copyright of the original newspaper text and images belonged to the publishers, Picasso will argue that his artistic transformation elevated the mundane newsprint into a work of art, imbuing it with new meaning and value. Right or wrong, there’s obviously room for improvement on all sides.

Let’s just imagine a Picasso vehemently rejecting innovation, sticking to the artistic comfort zone of his era, and scoffing at anything that wasn't considered 'classical.' The art world would have missed out on so much chaos, creativity, and cardboard-induced masterpieces! The relevance of Pablo Picasso's experiences to the AI art controversy of today, lies in the fact that just like Pablo, AI art is challenging traditional norms of art and currently facing resistance from art critics and enthusiasts. Will this monster be tamed or will it gain global acceptance and recognition just like Picasso? Time will tell.

“The Complex Dance Between Authors and Readers - Unmasking the Dark Side Of Reading" | The Digital Book Squad.

Reading takes on various forms and motivations, from an intellectual pursuit to a fashionable pastime. There are those who brandish their reading achievements like trophies, tallying up book counts as if it were a competitive sport. Then, there are the pragmatic readers, diligently poring over texts to ace exams and excel in their chosen fields. Yet, amid this diversity, a few universal factors emerge: the quest for information, honing effective communication, academic pursuits, and navigating the intricacies of personal beliefs (including religion, spirituality and faith).

Why does reading matter? Beyond the veneer of personal preference, reading is a fundamental survival skill. It grants access to a vast realm of information, fosters critical thinking, and challenges conformity and biases. In today's complex world, it's an indispensable tool for personal growth and navigating the deluge of information which can sometimes be FAKE NEWS. But as we dive into the worlds of both old and modern literature, we encounter a different facet of reading culture – a culture marred by bullying, elitism, classism, exclusion, copyright wars between authors, publishers & Artificial Intelligence - ‘Oh, is that actual writing?, Oh, Is this worth reading?

Fierce warriors battle on giant books, defending the sacred act of reading.

Who is going to publish this? AI stole my script’…
the chaos just described coupled with the sanctimonious judgment of readers with diverse tastes and backgrounds, casts a shadow on the otherwise enlightening world of books.

Authors and readers share a complex relationship, underpinned by responsibility, accountability and inclusivity. Authors must uphold the sanctity of truth and transparency in their writing, avoiding distortions and misrepresentations. Acknowledging evolving personal beliefs is equally crucial, as is engaging in respectful & inclusive discourse with readers. Readers bear the duty of discernment, scrutinizing text, and questioning assumptions. They must also recognize the influence of their own biases on their interpretation of a narrative.

Ethics looms large in the realm of literature. Instances of authors misleading their readers, as seen in James Frey's fabricated memoir or the ethical questions surrounding Ben Carson’s Gifted Hands, Donald Trump’s Trump 101 book amongst others, Wole Soyinka’s controversial and sometimes alarming stands on  socio-political issues even when the FACTS stare him in the face - it begs the question, can you separate the artist from their controversial actions, as exemplified by R. Kelly ‘cos sometimes these actions cast long shadows over the credibility of their written or other works.

A good book/author can lose relevance over time. Books, like any form of art, can succumb to the relentless march of time. The enduring quality of a book hinges on its ability to resonate with universal human virtues & experiences. While some books are evergreen and maintain their relevance across generations, others are bound by the epochs they represent, fading into obscurity. So, what defines a 'good' book or read? Is it a shared consensus, or does it reside in the personal connection forged between the reader and the text? Can a well-crafted narrative overshadow ethical lapses by its creator? - ‘cos you can actually feed readers with BS and they’ll believe it just ‘cos the author wrote in Gregorian English or the optics were right or an Ivy League School reviewed the book. Again, what makes a 'good' book or read?

The Future while the book world experiences revalued traditional reading experiences i.e people craving and appreciating physical books in the digital age, highlighting a tangible connection to written words which screens cannot offer, there’s also visible dynamic changes; a transitional phase where digital platforms like Amazon, Kindle and others are creating more spaces for independent publishing and unfiltered voices suppressed by mainstream narrative voices. Here the author’s original voice rises above traditional/bureaucratic processes. It also transforms reader-author relationship, making it more direct, intimate & interactive. As more digital platforms join the competition and with the emergence of AI, ecosystems within the book world will be decentralized just as creativity too.

In the end, the role of authors and readers is intertwined and multifaceted, with no one-size-fits-all answer. It rests upon all stakeholders to navigate the moral complexities of literature and determine their level of engagement, all while championing critical thinking and cherishing the diversity of voices in the ever-evolving world of books where everyone contributes and everyone benefits.

Bridging the Gap: Inclusivity in Publishing and the Quest for a Global Conversation | The Digital Book Squad.

In the hallowed halls of the publishing industry, the book reading and writing community, there exists an undeniable undercurrent of disdain, classism, and discrimination that manifests in the form of technical jargon, academic pretension, and an air of exclusivity. The elite world of literature, often steeped in foreign and imposed cultures, can sometimes feel like a fortress, shutting out the voices and experiences of the wider global community. Publishing firms like The Digital Book Squad are working to change this. This barrier not only inhibits genuine conversations but also limits the accessibility of crucial topics such as Climate Change, Global Economic Policies, and Artificial Intelligence, leaving underserved and marginalized groups in the shadows of ignorance.

Authors, in their pursuit of niche markets, often produce works that cater primarily to privileged readers, perpetuating the idea that these subjects are beyond the grasp of the common person. Yet, the inconvenient truth is that it is the underserved and impoverished communities who bear the brunt of the consequences wrought by these global issues. The publishing community, if it is to remain relevant and responsible, must confront this challenge head-on.

The first step towards inclusivity is to recognize that
literature and knowledge sharing should not be the exclusive domain of the intellectual elite. It should serve as a bridge that connects people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and socio-economic statuses. Authors, agents, and publishers need to embrace the idea that literature can be a powerful tool for education and empowerment. This means crafting narratives that are accessible, relatable, and written in plain language, while still maintaining their depth and complexity.

Furthermore, the publishing industry should actively seek out and support voices from underrepresented communities. It's not enough to merely publish diverse stories; there must also be an effort to promote and amplify these voices. Initiatives such as mentorship programs, grants, and scholarships for aspiring writers from marginalized backgrounds can help level the playing field.

To address the specific issues of Climate Change, Global Economic Policies, and Artificial Intelligence for instance, the publishing community should adopt a multi-faceted approach. Authors should collaborate with experts in these fields to distill complex ideas into digestible narratives. Publishers should invest in educational outreach programs that bring these topics into schools and community centers, ensuring that knowledge is accessible to all.

Moreover, the digital age presents an opportunity to break down barriers further. E-books and online platforms can provide affordable access to a wide range of literature, human and professional knowledge and exchange of same. Collaborative efforts between publishers, tech companies, and non-profit organizations can make high-quality educational content available to those who need it most.

In conclusion, the publishing industry stands at a crossroads. It can either perpetuate the divide between the privileged and the marginalized or become a catalyst for change and inclusivity. To truly serve the global community, it must prioritize accessibility, diversity, and education. Only then can knowledge through literature/writing be the bridge that connects people from all walks of life, fostering a truly global conversation on critical issues. It's time for the publishing community to redefine its purpose and embrace its role as a catalyst for positive change in an ever-evolving world.
